The Department of Parks, Recreation & Culture is seeking applicants for the position of part-time Community Museum Assistant at the Gaithersburg Community Museum.

Position Information:
The primary function of the position is to welcome visitors, provide information about the exhibits and local history, and point of sales in the Museum Shop.  Additional responsibilities will include administrative support functions; conducting research; developing exhibit information; cataloging the collection; and assisting in the development and running of special events, tours, and rentals.

Position Requirements/Essential Functions:
Must be responsible, dependable, punctual, and able to handle a wide variety of assignments.  Must be a creative, energetic self-starter, with the ability to work efficiently and effectively to plan and implement a variety of exhibits, events and programs.  Requires excellent customer service skills; strong research, organizational, time management and communication (both verbal and written) skills; a high level of attention to detail and accuracy; and the ability to problem solve, prioritize and meet deadlines.   Must be safety conscious, diplomatic, and professional; and have the ability to work independently and as part of a team.  Requires solid computer skills with a variety of programs (Microsoft Office Suite required; PastPerfect Museum Software a preferred skill).

Must be able to deal with customers in a positive, courteous, and professional manner.  Some physical demands (such as lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds); indoor and outdoor work conditions are possible.  Current First Aid/CPR/AED certifications preferred, or have the ability to become certified.  A valid Maryland driver’s license is required.

Prior experience in museum studies, anthropology, archaeology, or related field is preferred.  An interest in and knowledge of local history is a plus.  Social networking skills including maintaining a Facebook page preferred.
                                
Work Schedule:
Approximately 15 - 20 hours per week; must be available to regularly work daytime weekday and weekend hours and occasionally work events and rentals during non-business hours.

Salary/Benefits:
Salary range $10 to $17 per hour, depending on duties assigned, knowledge, qualifications, and experience.
